AAIN and IUCEA Sign Strategic MoU to Advance Innovation, Job Creation, and Enterprise Development in East Africa
September 17, 2025 – Kampala, Uganda
The African Agribusiness Incubators Network (AAIN) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), marking a major step toward transforming innovation, incubation, and job creation in the region.
The signing ceremony was attended by key representatives from both institutions, including (L–R) the Legal Officer IUCEA, AAIN CEO Prof. Alex Ariho, IUCEA Executive Secretary Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona, AAIN HR Director, and the Partnership Officer IUCEA.
This strategic partnership is designed to strengthen collaboration in university-led innovations and incubation management models, technology commercialization, and human and institutional capacity development in business incubation. The ultimate goal is to boost job and employment opportunities for young graduates across Africa.
Through the MoU, AAIN and IUCEA will work closely to support incubation and acceleration centers that address pressing regional challenges such as:
- Graduate unemployment and the mismatch between skills and employability.
- Food systems transformation and climate change resilience.
- Youth empowerment through enterprise and innovation.
Key areas of focus include:
- Building universities’ capacity to transition innovations into viable enterprises.
- Strengthening technology transfer, research commercialization, and intellectual property rights management.
- Promoting the “Cash for Jobs” initiative to create direct employment and income opportunities for university students.
- Facilitating the free movement of skills and labor across East African countries and beyond.
Speaking at the event, both institutions emphasized their shared commitment to unlocking innovation, supporting new business creation, and reshaping Africa’s agrifood and enterprise ecosystems. This collaboration will play a pivotal role in positioning East Africa as a hub for skills, knowledge, and innovation-driven growth.
This partnership also aligns with AAIN’s broader work under the Sustainable Inclusive Employment Pathways for Young Women (SIYEP) project, implemented in a consortium led by AFARD with funding from the Mastercard Foundation. The SIYEP initiative focuses on empowering youth – especially young women – to create new businesses and sustainable employment opportunities. The MoU with IUCEA reinforces this mission, ensuring that young graduates are better equipped to thrive in the future of work.
